Update on State of Laboratory Medicine

Management within the field of laboratory medicine requires more than attention to every day operations. Effective leadership dictates that we also keep a focus on the future in order to best prepare to manage the operations of tomorrow. This presentation will identify key trends impacting laboratory medicine including consumerism, technology, information systems and quality systems.

Session Objectives:
1. Understand the importance of managing and leading for the future.
2. Identify key trends which impact laboratory managers today.
3. Learn some practical means to keep a pulse on the laboratory environment

Ms. JoAnne Milbourn is President
of the Clinical Laboratory Management Association

JoAnne Milbourn has more than 30 years experience in healthcare within hospitals and integrated health systems, information technology organizations, commercial reference laboratories, and ambulatory and physician provider settings. She is currently working in the role of a Customer Program Executive for McKesson's Program Management Office, having previously worked with McKesson's Clinical Consulting Services group as an Engagement Manager and Ancillary Solutions Practice Leader. Ms. Milbourn has held previous positions as an internal laboratory consultant for a physician practice management company, manager of a hospital based laboratory provider organization and administrative director positions within hospital and commercial reference laboratories.

Her areas of expertise include:
o Project management of resources, tasks, risks and issues
o Change management and adoption strategies
o Clinical information technology systems integration
o Operations workflow improvement and process redesign
o Regulatory and compliance program development

Ms. Milbourn obtained her bachelor's degree in Medical Technology from Northern Illinois University and her master's degree in Health Services Administration from St. Joseph's College in Illinois. She is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute.
She has been an active member of CLMA since 1989, currently serving as that association's President. Ms. Milbourn has previously served CLMA at the national level as a Board Member and Chair of the Council of Chapter Presidents (now Leaders). She served as Chapter President for the Middle Tennessee Chapter (now Volunteer State Chapter).
