Mass Spectrometry in the Clinical Laboratory
James G. Flood Ph.D. is the Director, Chemistry Laboratory,
at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Assistant Professor of
Pathology at Harvard Medical School. He received his BA from Lehigh
University in 1971. Six years later he received a PhD in Analytical
Chemistry from Lehigh. Jim received his clinical chemistry training
from Drs. George Bowers and Robert McComb at Hartford Hospital from
1976-79. He moved to Massachusetts General Hospital as Assistant
Director of the Chemistry Lab in 1980. He has directed that lab
since 1984. Jim's interests include analytical toxicology, liquid
chromatography, and lab automation. His recent publications involve
Suboxone monitoring and the specificity of serum and urine amphetamine
and tricyclic antidepressant assays. His current R&D efforts
involve use of tandem mass spectrometry for testing for drugs in
oral fluid.
Thomas Annesley, Ph.D., is Professor of Clinical Chemistry
at the University of Michigan. He obtained his Ph.D. from Rice
University, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Mayo
Clinic. He joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in
1981. Dr. Annesley has been a member of the editorial boards of
multiple journals, and is currently the Deputy Editor of the journal
Clinical Chemistry. He is the author of the 14-part Clinical Chemistry
Guide to Scientific Writing. Among the awards he has received
are the Outstanding Speaker Award of the AACC and the award for
Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Mass Spectrometry.
Adam S. Ptolemy, Ph.D., is the director of toxicology
and Mass Spectrometry within the Department of Pathology at the
Brigham and Women's Hospital and an Instructor in the Department
of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, USA. He obtained his BSc
in chemistry from Brock University, Canada in 2003 and a PhD in
chemistry from McMaster University, Canada in 2008. He also completed
a research fellowship in clinical chemistry at the children's
Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School, USA in 2010. His research
interests focuses on the development of bioanalytical separation
assays, clinical biomarker validation and toxicology.
Leslie M Shaw, Ph.D., Professor Director, Toxicology Laboratory
Director, Biomarker Research Laboratory Department of Pathology
& Laboratory Medicine Perelman School of Medicine University
of Pennsylvania. I develop biomarker methods using multiplex immunoassay
systems; and using HPLC/tandem mass spectrometry methods. The
current focus of my studies are in two areas, the first is vitamin
D-practical HPLC/tandem mass spectrometry methodology; the second
in measurement of amyloid beta peptides in CSF as an index of
Alzheimer's disease.
Point of Care Testing
Bruce Aiken, RALS Regional Business Manager - Northeast.
Bruce is the Regional Busines Manager for RALS Data Management
Systems covering the northeast area of the US. He has a wide range
of diagnostic device and connectivity experience including time
as an eastern regional sales manager for Response Biomedical,
as well as hospital territory manager for International Technidyne
Corporation (ITC). Most recently, Bruce had been a regional business
consultant with Alere Home Monitoring.
Mike Kulpa, MBA. is Alere Account Executive Critical Care
Group.
Steven M. Berkowitz, M.D. is Board certified in internal
medicine, he is the Founder and President of SMB Health Consulting,
specializing in assisting physicians and hospitals in improving
clinical outcomes and performance. He has assisted over 150 clients
in the USA and Canada.
Previously, for twelve years he was Chief Medical Officer for
St. David's Healthcare, a six-hospital system in Austin, Texas,
as well as the Division CMO for HCA Central and West Texas Division,
which included 8 facilities in Austin and El Paso. As a member
of the senior executive team, he had the overall responsibility
of clinical outcomes improvement, physician development, strategic
planning, and medical management for the Division. During this
time he directed the implementation of numerous initiatives and
programs to improve the system's clinical effectiveness. St. David's
mortality index and CMS core measures are now among the best in
the nation. STEMI times have reached national best practice levels,
and SDH has been recognized at both the state and national levels
for patient care quality and performance excellence. In 2008 St.
David's received the Texas Award for Performance Excellence, a
Baldrige-based award. He was also Chairman of Capital Area Providers,
a 5.01-(a) Texas medical foundation with over 850 physicians.
Prior to this position, Dr. Berkowitz had been National Practice
Leader for Physician Services with the HayGroup. During this time
he assisted over 75 major healthcare clients throughout the USA
and Canada in the areas of strategic development, physician integration,
physician compensation, and medical practice management. He was
a senior executive for Harris Methodist Health System serving
as Medical Director of the HMO and Chief Medical Officer for the
integrated delivery system. He began his administrative career
as Medical/Executive director for The Travelers in Phoenix, Arizona.
Susan Selgren, PhD is a Senior Marketing Manager with
Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics in Norwood, MA. She has a Ph.D.
in Physical Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame. Sue is
currently responsible for worldwide marketing of Siemens urinalysis
and diabetes products, both for Point of Care and Central Lab
use. She works with core teams to understand customer needs as
new products are developed. She enjoys traveling with her husband,
and recent trips have included India, Hong Kong, Europe, and Australia.
Jo Ann Crain, BS, MLT (ASCP), Point of Care Specialist,
Boston Medical Center. Boston, MA. MS Crain has been a POint of
CAre Specialsist at BMC for 5 years. Previously, she was employed
as a technolgist in the Hematology Laboratory at BMC.
Analytical Methods in the Chemistry Laboratory
Pieter Muntendam, M.D., joined BG Medicine, Inc. as President
in November 2004 and was appointed as Chief Executive Officer
in December 2005. He also has served as a member of the board
of directors since November 2004. He is a biopharmaceutical and
healthcare executive with over 20 years of business experience
ranging from early stage enterprises to multinational corporations.
Dr. Muntendam joined BG Medicine, Inc. from NetNumina Solutions,
Inc., a professional services company, where he served as Director
of the Biopharma Healthcare Practice from April 2003 to October
2004. Prior to joining NetNumina, he co-founded Vitivity Inc.,
a subsidiary of Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and served as
Vice President, Medicine from July 2001 to April 2003. He founded
the health management firm ProMedex Inc. in 1996, where he served
as President and Chief Executive Officer and chairman of the board
until ProMedex was acquired by Landacorp, Inc. in 2001. Prior
to that, he served as Vice President of Care Management at Glaxo
Wellcome (now GlaxoSmithKline plc), where he was responsible for
the development and implementation of its entry strategy within
the field of care and disease management. Dr. Muntendam began
his career with Organon International Inc. in December of 1982,
after which he was appointed Vice President of Research and Development,
International at Johnson & Johnson, and appointed as a member
of the boards of directors for two Johnson & Johnson operating
companies. Dr. Muntendam received his M.D. from Leiden University
in the Netherlands.
Laura Worfolk is Scientific Director of Coagulation for
Quest Diagnostics. Previously she was the Scientific Manager for
Diagnostica Stago, a manufacturer of equipment and reagents for
coagulation testing. Her undergraduate degree was in Medical Technology
and graduate school degree in Cell Biology. Her entire career
has been in hemostasis and thrombosis, either in clinical laboratories
or in the diagnostic industry.
Richard M. O'Hara, Jr., Ph.D. received his doctoral degree
in Immunology from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical
School in Dallas, Texas. Following that he received postdoctoral
training at the Harvard Medical School, where he worked on mechanisms
of T cell mediated suppression. In 1988 he took a position at
Genetics Institute (later Wyeth Research) in Cambridge, MA. His
work on cytokine biology led to the development of two new therapeutic
entities in hematology and oncology. Later work in the role of
costimulation in graft rejection and autoimmunity led to the development
of several other drug candidates. He joined The Binding Site in
2007 as Senior Technical Director, focusing on the Freelite assay
for serum light chains. Dr. O'Hara is the author of numerous scientific
publications and holds several US patents related to his work
in autoimmunity and transplantation.

Phlebotomy
Randy Gruhlke, BSM, CPT, (NHA) Education Specialis Department
of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
Randy began his career with Mayo in 1999, working as a phlebotomist
at St. Marys hospital. In 2001, he became the Education Lead at
the Baldwin Outpatient laboratory, and then moved in 2004 to Rochester
Methodist Hospital as the Assistant Supervisor. In 2007, he became
the Assistant Supervisor of the Vascular Access Team and remained
in this position until early 2008, when he joined the Phlebotomy
Education team, a part of the Mayo School of Health Sciences. His
education includes an Associates of Science/Nursing, Bachelor of
Science in Business Management and he is currently enrolled in his
Master's program.
Sol F. Green, Ph.D., FACB, has over 25 years clinical
research experience in fields of Laboratory Medicine, including
preanalytical variability and errors, clinical chemistry and automation,
blood pH and gases, endocrinology, therapeutic drug monitoring,
toxicology, special chemistry and cardiac markers. He is a fellow
of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry, and is a certificated
Clinical Laboratory Director. Over the past seven years, he has
been responsible for oversight of the BD Diagnostics Preanalytical
Systems Department of Medical Affairs in North America, Latin
America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He has leadership
experience in professional organizations relevant to clinical
practices and standards: Global Preanalytical Scientific Committee
member, International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory
Medicine - Corporate member, Association of Clinical Scientist
- Scientific Council, Clinical Laboratory and Analytical Sciences
- Section Executive Committee and Past Chair, American Association
of Clinical Chemistry -
Becky Socha MS, MLS(ASCP)CM , received her undergraduate
degree in Medical Technology from Merrimack College in N Andover,
Ma and her MS in Clinical Laboratory Science from UMass Lowell.
Becky is currently the laboratory shift supervisor at Parkland
Medical Center where she has worked for 14 years. She also teaches
as adjunct faculty in the Health Sciences department at Merrimack
College in N Andover, Ma. and is adjunct faculty in the Clinical
Laboratory Science department at the University of Massachusetts,
Lowell campus. Becky is a trained "Labs are Vital" advocate
and speaker. She has always loved learning and teaching and is
an advocate of continuing education.
Management
Sean Hand, BS, Vice President of Ancillary Services Hallmark
Health SystemGraduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree from the
University of Pittsburgh in Health Information Management. Worked
as Director of HIM in both tertiary and community hospitals variety
of leaderships positions within
Kris Mailepars, MBA, is a New England native with 13 years
experience in Training and Leadership Development (Consumer Goods,
Finance & Consulting). Kris earned his MBA fro the University
of Otago in New Zealand in 2010, his thesis work was on Generational
Differences. He is currently head of Organizational Development
and Training at Catholic Medical Center and serves on the board
of the NH Chapter of American Society of Training and Development.
David Jackson, MBA is the Senior Vice President of Strategic
Services at ARUP Laboratories. He has been with ARUP since 2000
and holds BA and MBA degrees from the University of Utah. Mr.
Jackson's specific areas of responsibility at ARUP include strategic
planning, project management, education, human services, ARUP's
Family Health Clinic, and health and wellness programs. He has
also directed facility operations and development, and new building
construction during his tenure at ARUP.
Jane Hermansen MBA, MT(ASCP) has over 25 years of clinical
laboratory experience, within the community hospital and academic
medical center settings. At Mayo Clinic since 1988, she has held
a variety of positions, ranging from the clinical testing laboratory
to supporting Mayo Medical Laboratories. Today she works with
hospitals in the development and expansion of their outreach programs.
Jane holds a B.A. in Medical Technology from Concordia College
in Moorhead, Minnesota and a Masters of Business Administration
degree from the New York Institute of Technology. Her experience
includes clinical research, process engineering, laboratory outreach
consulting, training and facilitation and project management
EVENING DINNER AND LECTURE
MingMing Ning MD MMsc is a board certified in Neurology and
Vascular Subspecialty, with particular clinical interest in stroke
therapeutics such as thrombosis, hypothermia, and treatment of cardiac
structural abnormalities related to neurovascular injury. She is
currently Director of the Clinical Proteomics Research Center and
Co-director of the Cardio-Neurology Clinic in the MGH Department
of Neurology. Her clinical research utilizes proteomic technology
to explore the underlying mechanisms of various stroke-related disease
states and therapeutic interventions, in order to develop novel
markers to triage clinical treatment and find potential targets
of therapy. She has received awards from Howard Hughes Medical Institute,
AFMR, MGH, Yale University, and the American Heart Association Robert
G. Siekert Investigator Award for innovative neurovascular research.
She has been named among "America's Top Physicians" and
currently serves on the Harvard Medical School SCSP admission committee,
NIH scientific review panels, as reviewer for numerous journals,
and on the editorial board of various journals. In addition to her
clinical and research activities, Dr Ning plays and active role
in teaching and mentoring medical residents and research fellows.
